Try This: Hip Chips

October5

With the baseball play-offs underway, the NFL season in full swing, and hockey about to start, the TV is working overtime this fall…and Mama’s on the look-out for some healthy snacks for my couch-potato family. I think I’ve found a pretty good one—chips.

Mediterranean Snack Food Co Baked Lentil Chips

No, not those kind of chips… legumes. In fact, when it comes to chips, legumes are the new grains.

In the past month, I’ve seen chips made out of garbanzo beans, black beans, soybeans, red beans, pinto beans, navy beans, adzuki beans (sounds like Forrest Gump’s friend, Bubba, ticking off the different ways to make shrimp).

But I hadn’t run across lentil chips before (and I love lentils), so I just had to try The Mediterranean Snack Food Co.’s Baked Lentil Chips. I’m not a big snack eater (I prefer to drink my calories), but these chips are great.

Made with lentils, garbanzo and adzuki beans, these chips are crunchy and full of flavor. I really like the fact that they’re all natural, gluten free, high in fiber and have 70% less fat than regular potato chips. They are also gmo-free and have no trans fats.

One thing I’m not wild about? They’re pretty high in sodium.

They come in six varieties (I tried the Cucumber Dill). A serving size is 18 to 22 chips (wow!) depending on the variety, and 110 to 120 calories. Heck, these are so good, you may not even notice that your team is losing…

Nutrients per serving (Sea Salt variety)
Serving Size 1 oz (28g/About 18 chips)
Calories 110, Total Fat 3 g, Saturated Fat 0 g, Trans Fat 0 mg, Cholesterol 0 mg, Sodium 200 mg, Carbohydrate 16 g, Fiber 1 g, Sugars 2 g, Protein 5 g

Hi, I’m Mama

… and I’m high strung. Sounds like an AA meeting. I guess I’ve always been a little neurotic, but it got worse when these same six people kept showing up in the evening expecting to get fed. I’m pretty organized, but even that hasn’t saved me from the hell of the Daily Dinner Dilemma. Having said that, I also hate ordering take out because it is so damn expensive… and I can usually do it better with a lot less sodium… and so can you. If you nose around the site, you’ll see it’s kind of an eclectic mix… everything from tips for redoing your kitchen to some really cool kitchen gadgets and foods or products. Have a look around and let me know your thoughts.
