Without any research or fact-finding, I can state categorically: Everyone loves dips.

5 Delicious Dips... perfect for whatever you have on the table: chips, chicken strips, veggies, fruit...

And what does everyone like to dip? Everything.

I’ve come up with 5 Delicious Dips that take minutes to prepare and are perfect for anything you want to submerge in deliciousness. Most are healthy. One is particularly decadent, but c’mon… it’s a dip… not a meal.

In case you’re hosting an Oscar party, here’s a throwback post to one of my favorite appetizers!

The Oscar for Outstanding Food in an Academy Award nominated film goes to Crabby Snacks and Homemades, starring in “Silver Linings Playbook.”SilverLiningsPlaybk480

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” certainly provided some strong competition (the star of the movie is named Hushpuppy, afterall). Messy fresh crabs, fried alligator tail and even (gulp!) cat food had huge scenes.

Another contender: the White Cake that never got served in “Django Unchained.” Of course, “Life of Pi” and “Les Misérables” were most notable for the lack of food.

But back to the winner.

In Matthew Quick’s novel, “The Silver Linings Playbook,” he describes Crabby Snacks as “buttered crabmeat and orange cheese on English Muffins.” Homemades refer to homemade egg pasta.

I thought it would be fun to whip up my version of Crabby Snacks. They’re relatively simple to make. Because they’re made with processed cheese, white bread and mayo, you just know they are going to be absolutely delicious.

This recipe makes 48 bites, so if you aren’t feeding a crowd, cut the recipe in half. And serve it Sunday night during the big broadcast… it’s guaranteed to keep everyone from getting crabby when their Oscar picks don’t win!

Hatch Green Chile Aioli with Fried Green Tomatoes

Here’s one recipe you really need to know how to make: aïoli (pronounced “eye-oh-lee”).

Why do you need this creamy garlic-infused sauce in your kitchen know-how arsenal? Because it’s one of those condiments that can bring a little zip to so many dishes… and there are little ways you can change it to give it a bit more “WOW.”

Like when I added a few roasted Hatch Chiles.

I made Fried Green Tomatoes to go with my Hatch Chile Aïoli. But you can serve this full-flavored sauce with fish or chicken… or add a spoonful or two on top of fresh steamed vegetables to give them a kick.

Making aïoli is similar to making homemade mayonnaise, but a lot easier if you use a food processor or blender. Speaking of mayo, I sometimes use Hatch Chile Aïoli instead of mayonnaise in potato salad for a real taste sensation!

Crunchy Broccoli and Bacon Salad

Yep, been on a bit of broccoli binge lately… and this Crunchy Broccoli & Bacon Salad is my latest crave.

(Sure were a lot of “Bs” in that last sentence.)

Crunchy Broccoli & Bacon Salad Obviously, I love broccoli.

  • Not just because it provides more disease-fighting nutrients than almost any other vegetable.
  • Not just because it’s loaded with both soluble and insoluble fiber… good for the heart and digestive system.
  • Not just because it’s crazy low in calories.

Broccoli is my veg of choice because it pumps up the nutrition, flavor and color of almost any dish… and because there are SO MANY ways to prepare it;

  • Eat it raw.
  • Steam it.
  • Sauté it.
  • Soup it.
  • Use it to dip or turn it into a dip.

Or make it into a easy-Louisey Crunchy Broccoli & Bacon Salad like I did. Keep the lemony dressing very light… you don’t want to drown the florets. I added red peppers for color, but you can throw in cucumbers or some other equally crunchy vegetable. So… have at it! This is one binge-worthy food that’s actually healthy!
